Ice dams are formed when a gutter system becomes filled with moisture that freezes and forms a "dam" on the eave of the roof. A visible sign is those attractive icicles that form along the edges of your roof. When snow builds up on the roof then melts and refreezes at the roof's edge, you get ice dams.
Escaping heat above your living quarters warms the roof and melts the snow. During a thaw, water from those ice dams can leak into the house causing expensive interior damage. What's insured and what's not Homeowners policies cover water damages to floors, ceilings and walls. But they do not normally cover damages to household contents.
